Abstract

Non suicidal self-injurious (NSSI) is a form of maladaptive coping strategy frequently used by adolescents to manage emotion distress. One of the psychological factors that may reduce the tendency to engage in self-injurious behavior is self-compassion, which refers to an individual’s ability to accepst and treat themselves with kindness when facing difficulties. This study aimed to describe the level of self-compassion among students who engage in self-injurious at SMA Negeri 6 Tasikmalaya. This study employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive research design. Data were collected from 741 students using the Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory (DSHI) and the Self-compassion Scale (SCS). Based on the self-injurious assessment, 320 students who were identified as engaging in self-injurious at mild to severe levels were included in the analysis. The findings indicated that 91,56% of the participants were categorized as having moderate self-injurious, while 8,44% were classified as servere. Regarding self-compassion, most students who engaged in self-injurious were in the moderate category 40,00%, followed by the low 28,75%, high 20,00%, very high 5,94%, and very low 5,31% categories. Analysis by aspect revealed that the positive aspect self-kindness 75,93%, common humanity 77,34%, and mindfulness 76,25% showed higher percentages than the negative aspect, namely self-judgment 58,86%, isolation 50,69%, and over-identification 58,13%. These findings highlight the importance of developing guidance and counseling services that focus on enhancing self-compassion as both preventive and curative efforts to help students develop more adaptive coping strategies and reduce the tendency to engage in self-injurious behavior.
